When someone nearby searches for what you sell, Google usually shows a map with a handful of local businesses before any websites appear. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and for many small businesses they drive more calls and visits than the website itself. The best part: it’s free.
Here are ten ways to make your profile work harder for you.
1. Claim and Verify Your Profile
If you haven’t claimed your listing, someone else (or Google) may have created one with outdated information. Claim it at business.google.com and complete verification so you control what customers see.
2. Choose the Right Primary Category
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear for. Be specific: “Italian Restaurant” beats “Restaurant,” and “Roofing Contractor” beats “Contractor.” Add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer.
3. Keep Your Hours Accurate, Including Holidays
Nothing frustrates customers more than showing up to a locked door. Update regular hours, add special hours for holidays and seasonal changes, and Google will show customers that your information is current.
4. Use the Same Name, Address and Phone Everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps and directories. Inconsistent details confuse customers and weaken your local rankings.
5. Write a Helpful Business Description
Use the 750-character description to explain what you do, who you serve and where. Write for people first. Mention your town and service area naturally, but skip the keyword stuffing.
6. Add Real Photos Regularly
Profiles with fresh, real photos look more trustworthy. Add pictures of your storefront, your team, your products and your finished work. Avoid stock photos here; customers want to see the real thing.
7. List Your Products and Services
The products and services sections help Google match you to more specific searches and give customers a quick menu of what you offer, often with prices.
8. Post Updates and Offers
Google Posts let you share news, events and specials right on your profile. A short post every week or two shows customers (and Google) that your business is active.
9. Ask for Reviews and Respond to Every One
Reviews influence both rankings and buying decisions. Make asking for reviews part of your routine, and reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
10. Answer Questions and Turn On Messaging
Customers can ask questions on your profile, and anyone can answer them. Monitor and answer questions yourself, and consider enabling messaging so customers can reach you with one tap.
Link Your Profile to a Strong Website
Your Google Business Profile and your website work together. A fast, mobile-friendly website with clear service and location pages helps your profile rank and gives customers the details they need to choose you.
