Google Analytics is free, powerful and, for many business owners, completely overwhelming. Since Google retired its older Universal Analytics in 2023, every site now uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4), which looks and works differently from what many people were used to.

You don’t need to master every report. These five will tell you most of what you need to know.

1. Traffic Acquisition: How People Find You

Under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, you’ll see where visitors come from: organic search, paid ads, social media, email, other websites or typing your address directly. This tells you which marketing efforts are actually bringing people in.

2. Pages and Screens: What People Look At

Under Engagement → Pages and screens, you’ll see your most-visited pages. Make sure your most important service pages are getting attention, and look for popular pages that could use a stronger call to action.

3. Key Events: What People Do

GA4 calls important actions key events: form submissions, phone number clicks, bookings or purchases. If these aren’t set up, you’re only measuring visits, not results. This is the single most valuable improvement most small business sites can make.

4. Device Breakdown: Phone vs. Desktop

Check how many visitors use phones versus desktops. If most of your traffic is mobile, which is common for local businesses, your site’s mobile experience deserves the most attention.

5. Location: Where Your Visitors Are

The demographic and location reports show which cities and regions visitors come from. For a local business, this confirms whether you’re reaching people in your actual service area.

Tips for Getting Useful Data

  • Filter out your own visits so they don’t skew the numbers
  • Use UTM tags on email and social links so you can see exactly which campaigns work
  • Connect Google Search Console to see which searches lead people to your site
  • Look at trends over months, not just day to day
