Bright, tidy office with a white desk, laptop and green plants

You spring clean your home and your shop. Your website deserves the same attention. Over the course of a year, small problems pile up: outdated information, broken links, old plugins and pages nobody visits. None of them seem urgent on their own, but together they make your site slower, less secure and less convincing to customers.

Set aside an afternoon and work through this checklist.

Content and Accuracy

  1. Check your contact details. Phone numbers, email addresses, hours and your address should be correct on every page, especially the header, footer and contact page.
  2. Update your services and prices. Remove services you no longer offer and add new ones. Outdated pricing causes awkward conversations.
  3. Refresh your photos. Replace old team photos and product images. Current photos build trust.
  4. Remove stale announcements. Last year’s holiday hours or a finished promotion makes a site look neglected.

Technical Health

  1. Fix broken links. Click through your menu and key pages, or use a link checker. Broken links frustrate visitors and hurt SEO.
  2. Test every form. Submit your contact and quote forms and make sure the messages actually arrive.
  3. Check your site on a phone. Make sure buttons are easy to tap, text is readable and nothing runs off the screen.
  4. Test your speed. Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights and address the biggest issues, which are often oversized images.

Security and Maintenance

  1. Update WordPress, themes and plugins. Updates fix security holes. If you skip them, you leave the door open.
  2. Delete what you don’t use. Remove unused plugins, themes and old user accounts. Fewer moving parts means fewer vulnerabilities.
  3. Confirm your backups work. A backup you have never tested is just a hope. Make sure you can actually restore your site.
  4. Check your SSL certificate. Make sure your site loads securely with https and that the certificate isn’t close to expiring.

Make It a Habit

A quick quarterly check keeps small problems from turning into big ones. Better yet, a website maintenance plan takes the whole list off your plate: updates, backups, security monitoring and fixes are handled for you.
